The hepatitis A virus is one of several viruses that can cause inflammation of the liver (known as hepatitis). Hepatitis A is spread when infected faecal matter enters the mouth.
Symptoms can be severe but most people infected with hepatitis A recover completely.
Once you have had hepatitis A you cannot get it again.
Vaccination against hepatitis A is available.
