Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is now available at FPV clinics to help people at risk avoid HIV infection.
PrEP is the regular, daily use of anti-HIV medications by ‘at risk’ HIV-negative people to prevent HIV becoming HIV positive.
HIV remains a serious and potentially life threatening and life shortening infection.
In Australia some sexually active gay or bisexual men, transgender people and some heterosexual people (who have an HIV positive partner) are population groups that are considered at high risk for HIV infection.
Research shows that PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV transmission in these population groups.
PrEP is an important new option in HIV prevention strategies in Australia and will support our collective goal to end HIV transmission here.
The drug is now listed on the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) which means the cost is subsidised if you have a Medicare card.
If you would like to talk to someone at FPV about PrEP, please book a ‘General reproductive or sexual health’ appointment online or call us on (03) 9257 0100 to make a booking. If you are eligible for PrEP we are able to give you a prescription which you can take to a pharmacy for collection.
