Family Planning Victoria wish to announce that the LGBTIQ youth group, Splash (formerly known as YAK), will be ceasing operations, effective immediately.
We are viewing this as very positive move and indeed, cause for celebration.
In 1993, when YAK first began, there were very few groups in the Melbourne metro area that were specifically to provide support for LGBTIQ youth. As a result, those young people frequently felt unsupported and marginalised.
FPV saw there was a great need for such a group and so Yak came about. Yak was well attended for many years, was in a few different locations and had a few different formats. The goal was always the same: to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for LGBTIQ youth.
Over the last few years attendance has declined as more and more social and support groups for LGBTIQ youth have started. Many more young people are able to come out and be proud and welcomed by the wider community.
Family Planning Victoria is proud to say that Splash/Yak is no longer needed.
FPV will continue to advocate for and support the needs of LGBTIQ youth and adults through our Community Outreach Service, as well as in our core business and everyday practice.
While Splash is no more, this means that we are able to provide increased support to youth from priority populations via our Community Outreach Service, as well as increase our capacity building activities across the state.
Our current programs include:
Community Outreach Service
Our Community Outreach Service provides free education for young people who are not part of the mainstream schooling system, the professionals who support them, as well as their parents and carers around reproductive and sexual health, especially Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections (BBV/STI).
This service also provides support and education services for existing and new LGBTIQ youth support groups.
