FPV are seeking casual employee 'Tutor Clients' to assist with cervical screen training

Family Planning Victoria (FPV) trains nurses who want to specialise in sexual and reproductive health and perform cervical screening tests (CSTs).

Registered nurses or midwives undertaking cervical screening training at FPV have a minimum of 12 months nursing experience.

FPV employed nurses who teach and supervise the nurse trainees are called preceptors. They are advanced practice sexual & reproductive health nurses who are expert teachers of cervical screening.

FPV cervical screening trainees attend two days of face-to-face training before undertaking a tutor client practice session. Preparation includes lecture-based sessions focused on sexual history taking and cervical screening theory, a practical workshop using pelvic models, and group work.

Who can be a tutor client?
The tutor-client must be a person with a cervix who has undergone cervical screening in the past. They should not take part in the booked session if menstruating at that time.

Role of the tutor client
Play the role of a “pseudo” client who requires a cervical screening test.

Present a simple client case study to the student. Note: the aim of the session is to practice new clinical skills in a supportive learning environment.

  • To be guided by the FPV facilitator to provide a high-quality learning experience for the student.
  • Discuss ways the student can provide a positive cervical screening experience for the client.
  • taking a sexual history
  • explaining cervical screening
  • using a speculum to view the cervix and simulate taking a CST

What happens in a tutor client practice session?
The session is designed to simulate a consultation between a sexual and reproductive health nurse and a client presenting for a CST. The session aims to enable practice in:

  • taking a sexual history
  • explaining cervical screening
  • using a speculum to view the cervix and simulate taking a CST
See Tutor Client Session Guidelines for full details.

Introductory session for tutor clients
Before the first tutor client session, each tutor client will meet with a nurse educator for 30 minutes. This will allow for a brief explanation of the session, discussion and questions and orientation. Each tutor client will attend just one introductory session.

Venue
Sessions will be held at the Family Planning Victoria Clinic at 901 Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill. (Free parking is available at FPV premises).

Payment
The initial 30-minutes introductory session will be paid at $40.

Payment to the tutor client will be $80 per hour. A maximum of three sessions of 45 minutes may be booked on each day.

The tutor client will receive a casual employment contract from FPV HR to enable payment and the opportunity to participate in future sessions.

Reliability
Please arrive prior to the designated session time so that the full 45 minutes is available for each trainee’s practice session.

If unable to attend at the agreed tutor-client session time, contact should be made to the Clinical Education Unit on 9257 0129. We appreciate having as much notice as possible to lessen disruption to all involved in training.
