Sexuality Education and Intervention Service (SEIS) for people with an intellectual disability

"I can’t take my son out anymore because he masturbates in public."

"I’m worried about one of my female clients because she hugs and kisses strangers."

The SEIS may be able to help.

The SEIS provides a statewide service to people of any age who have an intellectual disability and are registered with the Department of Human Services. SEIS clients display behaviours that put themselves at significant risk of being sexually exploited or of abusing others. Parents, carers or staff who believe the SEIS may assist them are encouraged to contact Angela or Brenda on 9257 0133. Please note that to be accepted into the SEIS program a case manager from the Department of Human Services will need to complete a human relations assessment of needs report.

Intervention involves the development and implementation of an intensive, individually tailored education plan. This plan aims to address the gaps in a client’s human relations knowledge, which may be contributing to the ‘at risk’ behaviour. The SEIS adopts an environmental approach and strategies/responses may also be developed for key staff or carers to implement. Ideally sessions would occur in the environment where the at-risk behaviours occur most. A key staff member or carer participates in each session so that key concepts can be reinforced between and beyond sessions.

The SEIS also provides a phone consultation service. Key staff or carers can speak to an experienced worker who is available to discuss the at risk behaviour/s. Immediate responses and strategies plus the resources to assist with their implementation may be suggested. Alternatively, where another service better meets the client’s needs other referrals may be recommended.
