Serving
People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse
Communities
Clients
of Family Planning Victoria come
from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including
newly arrived migrants from Sudan, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan,
China and Vietnam. We work closely with community leaders
and agencies that directly service these communities
so as to build mutual understanding and improve knowledge
sharing and training, with the aim of improving access
to sexual
and reproductive health services.
We
recognise that different people and cultures view sex and
family planning differently. Our health professionals
and educators uphold the organisation's value to be sensitive
to the impact of gender, culture and social environment
on sexual health beliefs and behaviours, and we acknowledge
the need for culturally appropriate education strategies.
Family
Planning Victoria also realises that access to sexual and
reproductive health services should not be hindered by
languauge barriers. We work with accredited translating
and interpreting agencies to provide language assistance
for our clients and continuously identify relevant resources
that are provided in languages other than English for our
clients.
