Youth Services at FPV

FPV has youth services at the Action Centre, Box Hill and across Victoria

Services provided at FPV's Action Centre include:

Education

Our educators see clients on an individual and/or group basis either formally or informally. The issues are wide ranging and the services cover all of Victoria. An example of our services include Juvenile Justice group work on responsible sexual behaviour, young gay and lesbian peer support programs, work with disadvantaged schools on sexuality issues especially around HIV/AIDS, IV drug use and same sex attracted young people.

FPV also provides an extensive sexual health program in the primary, secondary and tertiary education sector.

Counselling

We provide a number of counselling services and see clients for sexual assault counselling, pregnancy counselling and sexual identity counselling.

Contraceptive Advice/Decision Making

We consult with young people about all their contraception requirements from emergency contraception to the Intra-Uterine Device. We also have a licence to dispense contraceptive items from the Centre at a discount.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

HIV/AIDS Hep A, B & C

We see a large proportion of our client group for the treatment or counselling for STIs. This ranges from chlamydia to HIV, Hep B & C and vaccination.

YAK

Yak is a social support group for young men and women who are attracted to others of the same sex. Some of the participants identify as gay or lesbian, others as bisexual, whilst some prefer the term queer. Some are unsure of their sexual identity, confused about who they are, or reluctant to pigeonhole themselves with a particular identity. Yak aims to create a safe place for these diverse young people to meet and discuss a range of issues in a comfortable, relaxed environment.

A common thread that links access and service provision is the perception of a safe environment and confidentiality for young people. Confidentiality remains an important issue for rural youths includes lack of public transport, infrequent hours of ocal services, conservative rural attitudes, etc., which lend to increased difficulty with maintaining confidentiality.
