Blood Borne Viruses

These are viruses that are transmitted through contact with infected blood. Diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C can be transmitted via

  • Blood transfusion
  • Using infected needles and other parts of the injecting kit
  • Having sex (where you come into contact with blood)
  • Sharing equipment such as razors

While the incidence of virus contamination of the blood supply is almost non-existent, it is possible to be infected in the other ways even though there may be no evidence of blood on the needle, syringe (when using IV drugs) or even on the genitals of your sexual partner.

So always use a condom and use new syringes, needles and spoons and never share these even with your boyfriend or girlfriend.

For more information click onto the Hepatitis C site or contact Family Planning Victoria on 03 9257 0100.
